THE SCIENCE OF FLEXIBILITY

Flexibility is a key aspect of physical health, allowing your muscles and joints to move freely without much restriction. It helps in daily movements like bending, stretching, and even walking. Having good flexibility reduces the risk of injuries and improves overall movement efficiency. Still, many people ignore flexibility and focus only on strength or cardio.

There is a common myth about flexibility: “you are born with it.” But that’s not true. Flexibility is not fixed. Anyone can improve it with consistent stretching and proper training. It just takes time and patience.

Factors determining flexibility:

  1. MUSCLE STRENGTH: Flexibility alone is not enough to make your movements stable. You need basic muscle strength to control and protect your body in those ranges. Strength and flexibility should go together.

  2. AGE: It is a well-known fact that flexibility decreases with age. But the body is adaptable. If you keep training and stretching regularly, you can maintain and even improve flexibility. Age becomes a problem only when you stop moving your body.

  3. GENDER: Females generally tend to be more flexible than males due to differences in body structure and hormones. Higher estrogen levels make ligaments more relaxed and allow better movement. But this doesn’t mean males cannot become flexible. With proper training, anyone can improve.

  4. TEMPERATURE: Body temperature plays a big role. Without warming up, muscles and tendons are stiff. After a proper warm-up, the body becomes relaxed and stretching becomes easier and safer. Always warm up before stretching.

  5. CONSISTENCY: Flexibility cannot be improved in a day. It takes time to lengthen muscles and improve joint range. Doing it once in a while won’t help. You need to stay consistent to see real progress.

Think of flexibility like reading a book. You don’t finish it in one day. You go step by step, chapter by chapter. In the same way, daily efforts in stretching will slowly take you to your goal.

Understand your body and how it reacts to different conditions. This will help you decide “when to train” and “how much to do.” Listen to your body and stay regular.

It doesn’t matter how fast you go, what matters is that you keep going.

SPEED < CONSISTENCY
